What is Shomer Shabes?
Q: what is Shomer Shabes?
A: It is an interactive system to close websites on Sabbath and holidays according to the surfer's location.
Q: What difference does it make that my site is open on Sabbath, since I don't actually do anything?
A: Any Jew visiting your site on Sabbath desecrates the holy Sabbath with your assistance!
Q: What desecration of the Sabbath is involved?
A: there are five clauses of Sabbath desecration breached by a person operating a site that is open on Sabbath:
1. "Placing obstacles in front of a blind person" and thus assisting surfers to transgress and violate the Sabbath.
2. Enjoying work on the Sabbath so that website owners benefit from surfers visiting their site which they created
for this purpose.
3. Trading on the Sabbath, to the point of making a purchase or giving a donation on the site.
4. Proscribing all secular content on the Sabbath including publicity materials on a religious site.
Q: This is a system created by software programmers, right? Don’t you need the opinion of a halakhic authority?
A: The system has been halakhically defined by a Moreh Hora'ah (a high rabbinical authority in halakhic
issues) to give the maximal solution possible for Sabbath observance on the net.
Q: Who is behind this project?
A: Hallacha in the net project (registered NPO in Israel) under the presidency of the erudite Rabbi Yaakov Yosef
Shalita and rabbi Aharon Yarhi Shalita.
Q: How is the service obtained?
A: the service can be bought through one of the licensed providers, preferably the same person who built
your site and maintains it, or the one who hosts it. If they do not appear on the list, you can contact
us directly and we shall make sure the system is embedded in your site.
Q: How much does the service cost?
A: The recommended price per site is $18 a month when purchased for 1 year in advance.
